Accountable to the floor supervisor and the eye-in-the-sky camera for two things simultaneously: correct-to-the-dollar payouts and an unbroken chain of procedure (burn card, shuffle penetration, no-touch zones) that makes the game provably fair. The defining tension: every second at the table is paid speed the house wants, but every procedural shortcut taken to keep the game moving — paying from memory instead of counting out, letting a stack get touched after the outcome is visible — is exactly the gap a past-poster or a hole-carder is waiting for. ## First-principles core 1. **Payout ratio is a property of the specific table's posted rules, not a skill the dealer carries between pits.** A dealer who spent the last month on a 6:5 blackjack table and rotates onto a 3:2 table will pay a $100 blackjack $120 out of muscle memory instead of $150 — the ratio lives on the felt signage, not in the dealer's hands, and has to be re-verified at every table change. 2. **A resolved bet is a closed transaction the moment the outcome is visible — nothing about the stack changes after that, by anyone.** Past-posting (adding chips after the result is known) and pinching (removing chips from a losing bet) both exploit the half-second between outcome and payout; the control is that the dealer's hands, not the player's, are the only ones that touch chips in that window. 3. **The shuffle and cut are a randomness guarantee, not a ritual to get through.** Cut-card penetration (how much of the shoe gets dealt before the cut card forces a reshuffle) is set by the property specifically to balance game speed against advantage-play exposure — deviating from the specified depth, or from the specified shuffle sequence, silently changes the game's actual odds. 4. **The tray is a running balance the dealer defends before it's empty, not after.** A tray that hits zero mid-shoe forces a stop in play, which costs the house more in dead table-time than the fill call would have — the fill threshold exists precisely so the call happens with room to spare. 5. **The floor supervisor is where authority for judgment calls lives, not the dealer.** A dealer can execute procedure flawlessly and still create a liability by ruling on a marker request, a rules dispute, or an ambiguous past-post themselves instead of pausing play and calling it upstairs — the pause is the control, not a failure to handle it. ## Mental models & heuristics - **When a payout ratio feels automatic, default to counting it out chip by chip against the posted rule before moving it into the stack — never pay from the rhythm of the last table you worked.** A $10 shortfall or overpayment repeated across a shift is a measurable house-edge or shortage problem, not a rounding issue. - **When any chip stack changes after the outcome is visible, default to freezing that hand and calling the floor — never adjudicate a past-post or pinch attempt at the table alone.** The dealer's read of "accidental" versus "deliberate" isn't the control; the freeze-and-escalate is. - **When the tray drops below the property's fill threshold (commonly ~50% of the opening bank), default to calling the fill before dealing the next hand, not after the next loss.** Waiting risks a mid-shoe stoppage, which is the outcome the threshold exists to prevent. - **When a player requests credit (a marker) at the table, default to routing the request to the floor/credit desk — a dealer extending "just this one" is extending an unapproved credit line.** The floor, not the felt, is where credit limits are checked. - **When a betting pattern shows a sudden multi-unit spread (e.g., $25 flat bets jumping to $200+) right after a shuffle, default to a quiet flag to the floor/surveillance, not a confrontation at the table.** A spread ratio much beyond roughly 1:8 (min to max bet within a session) is a classic count-tracking signature — the dealer's job is to surface the pattern, not accuse the player. - **"Dealer's choice" house-rule flexibility (e.g., surrender allowed, resplit limits) is a table-sign fact, not a default assumption** — verify against the posted card every time a player asks, since it varies by property and even by pit within the same casino. - **When a dispute over a hand's outcome or a rule interpretation arises, default to stopping action and calling the floor before speaking a ruling yourself.** A dealer who wins the argument on the felt but skipped the escalation has still created a liability if the player disputes it later — there's no record of an impartial second look. ## Decision framework 1. A dealer who rotated in ten minutes ago spent the prior month on the casino's 6:5 pit. This round: Seat 3 bets $100 and is dealt Queen-Ace, a natural blackjack. Seat 5 bets $100 and wins an even-money hand. The naive read (the dealer's 6:5 muscle memory): pay Seat 3 $100 × 6/5 = $120. The correct read: this table's posted rule is 3:2, so Seat 3 is owed $100 × 3/2 = $150 — a $30 underpayment if the 6:5 habit goes uncaught. The dealer catches it before moving chips, counts out $150 against the rules card, and pays it. Seat 5's even-money win pays $100 flat — no ratio ambiguity there. Total paid out this round: $150 + $100 = $250. Tray after payout: $1,690 − $250 = $1,440, which is now below the $1,500 fill threshold by $60. Under house procedure, the dealer calls the fill before dealing the next hand rather than after another loss drops it further.
