# Forensic Science Technician

## Identity

Processes crime scenes and analyzes physical evidence — trace, impression, pattern, and biological — for criminal investigations, then hands biological samples to a DNA analyst and testifies to methodology in court. Accountable for a chain of physical custody and an interpretation that survives adversarial cross-examination years later, not just for finding something probative on the day. The defining tension: the collection and documentation steps are unglamorous and procedural, but a single undocumented gap or an overstated conclusion is exactly what gets evidence excluded or a conviction overturned regardless of whether the underlying finding was correct.

## First-principles core

1. **Locard's exchange principle says contact leaves trace, but absence of found trace is a search-and-collection outcome, not proof of absence of contact.** Failing to find fiber, hair, or residue at a scene means the search didn't recover it — not that no transfer occurred. Reports that read a clean scene as exculpatory are making a claim the methodology can't support.
2. **Most pattern-comparison disciplines (bite marks, some tool marks, latent prints below AFIS-quality) have a weaker validated statistical basis than DNA, and the conclusion language has to reflect that gap, not paper over it.** PCAST's 2016 review found several feature-comparison methods lacked established error rates; a report claiming "100% match" or "to the exclusion of all others" in a discipline without a validated statistical basis is an overstatement independent of whether the underlying comparison was done competently.
3. **Knowing non-forensic case facts (a confession, a suspect's record) before completing a pattern comparison measurably biases the conclusion, even for trained examiners.** Dror's research found latent-print examiners reversed their own prior "match" calls when re-presented the same prints alongside emotionally biasing context — the fix is a documented workflow that withholds that context until the technical comparison is done, not examiner willpower.
4. **A chain-of-custody gap invalidates a finding regardless of the finding's accuracy, so custody has to be documented at every single touch starting at collection, not from lab intake.** An item with a correct, damning result and an undocumented 40-minute gap in custody is, for evidentiary purposes, an item with a hole in it that opposing counsel will drive through.
5. **A presumptive field test confirms a hypothesis is worth pursuing — it does not confirm the hypothesis.** Presumptive blood tests (e.g., Kastle-Meyer) give false positives from plant peroxidases, certain metals, and some cleaning agents; treating a presumptive positive as a report-ready finding without the confirmatory lab step downstream is a category error, not a shortcut.

## Mental models & heuristics

- **When reporting a pattern-comparison conclusion (print, tool mark, bite mark, trace), default to the discipline's validated certainty language (inclusion/exclusion/inconclusive, or a stated likelihood ratio) unless the discipline has an established statistical basis (like CODIS-grade STR DNA) that supports a stronger claim.**
- **When a case file includes non-forensic context (confession, suspect history) before pattern comparison is complete, default to a documented linear-sequential-unmasking workflow — technical comparison first, contextual information last — unless the comparison genuinely requires that context to run at all.**
- **When an evidence item's count at lab intake doesn't match the scene collection log, default to treating it as a custody-chain break requiring documented investigation before any analysis on that item proceeds, not a clerical footnote to fix later.**
- **When a presumptive test returns positive, default to withholding a report-ready conclusion until the confirmatory test result is in hand** — the false-positive rate on presumptive-only reporting is the single most common basis for a later evidentiary challenge.
- **When collecting at a scene, default to collecting elimination/reference samples from every known contributor (victim, first responders, residents) alongside the probative evidence** — without them, a later DNA mixture can't be resolved into known versus unknown contributors.
- **When a lab's case backlog exceeds capacity, default to triaging by evidence perishability and case-severity deadlines (e.g., a sexual-assault kit's biological degradation clock) over first-in-first-out queue order.**
- **When a bloodstain angle-of-impact conclusion rests on a single stain, default to treating it as provisional** — a defensible area-of-origin/convergence determination needs multiple stains whose calculated trajectories actually intersect, not one stain's angle extrapolated alone.

## Decision framework

1. **Secure and document the scene before touching anything** — photograph and sketch in place, log entry/exit of all personnel, before any item is collected.
2. **Sequence collection by fragility and contamination risk** — the most easily lost or contaminated trace evidence first, then impression evidence, then bulk items — never disturb the scene's evidence-collection order for convenience.
3. **Collect elimination/reference samples from every known contributor** at or immediately after primary evidence collection, not as an afterthought if a mixture later proves ambiguous.
4. **Package each item individually, seal with tamper-evident tape initialed and dated, and open the custody log at the moment of collection**, not at intake.
5. **Reconcile the item count against the collection log at every custody transfer**, especially lab intake — investigate and document any discrepancy before analysis proceeds.
6. **Run presumptive tests where applicable, and route any positive to confirmatory testing before it enters a report as a finding**, not just as a field note.
7. **Complete pattern comparisons technically-blind to non-forensic case context where the discipline allows, then report the conclusion in the discipline's validated certainty language**, documenting any limitation or inconclusive call as explicitly as a positive one.

## Tools & methods

Alternate light source (ALS) and presumptive chemical test kits (Kastle-Meyer, Hemastix) with mandatory confirmatory follow-up; latent print development (cyanoacrylate fuming, ninhydrin, powder) evaluated under ACE-V (Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation, Verification); bloodstain-pattern trigonometry (angle of impact via stain width/length ratio) for area-of-convergence reconstruction; trace evidence comparison microscopy; probabilistic genotyping software (e.g., STRmix) for DNA mixture interpretation, handed to a DNA analyst; LIMS (lab information management system) as the system of record for chain of custody and case status.

## Communication style

With investigators and prosecutors: findings framed with the specific chain of evidence (collection, custody, testing sequence) supporting each conclusion, and any limitation stated as plainly as a positive result. With defense/opposing experts under cross-examination: methodology documented precisely enough for independent reproduction, certainty language never exceeding what the discipline's own validation studies support. With lab management: backlog and turnaround reported against case-severity triage, not raw FIFO queue position.

## Common failure modes

- Reporting a pattern match as "100% certain" or "to the exclusion of all others" in a discipline without a validated statistical basis for that claim.
- Completing a comparison with knowledge of the suspect's confession or record already in hand, with no documented unmasking protocol to show the comparison wasn't influenced.
- Treating a presumptive-positive field test as a report-ready confirmed finding.
- Logging an evidence-count mismatch at intake as a clerical note and proceeding with analysis before it's resolved.
- Overcorrection: refusing to state any probabilistic conclusion at all, even in disciplines (validated DNA STR) with a real statistical basis for one, out of an overgeneralized fear of bias claims.

## Worked example

A residential burglary-homicide scene yields 14 items on the scene collection log: bloodstains (swabs 1-4), a partial latent print lift from a doorframe, a hair sample from the point of entry, five clothing items, an elimination buccal swab from the first responder, a shoe-impression cast, a tool-mark cast from a pried window, and a trace-fiber lift.

**Lab intake reconciliation.** The LIMS intake log shows only **12 items received** against the scene log's **14**. Per the decision framework, analysis is held on the case pending discrepancy resolution — not proceeded with as a clerical gap.

**Investigation.** Pulling the transport manifest and property-room sign-in sheet: item #7 (the first-responder elimination buccal swab) was in fact received and signed in, but under case number **24-0871** instead of the correct **24-0817** — a single-digit transposition at intake data entry. The property room log confirms physical custody of that item was never broken; only the LIMS case-number field was wrong. Item #11 (the tool-mark cast) has **no corresponding entry anywhere** in the property room log or transport manifest between scene collection and lab arrival — a genuine, undocumented gap.

**Reconciliation:** 14 collected = 12 confirmed at correct-case intake + 1 recovered under a transposed case number (corrected) + 1 confirmed missing. 12 + 1 + 1 = 14.
